Mining of Cornwall, Pennsylvania – 236 Years of Bounty

November 9 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Join us on Sunday, November 9, 2025, at 2:00pm in the Historical Auditorium where Mike Weber will present on the “Mining of Cornwall, Pennsylvania – 236 Years of Bounty.”

Mike will tell the fascinating history of mining at Cornwall, which put Lebanon (or Steitztown) on the map and helped build the industrial might of Central Pennsylvania. Mining iron ore began at Cornwall in 1737 and continued until Bethlehem Steel ceased mining in 1973. In addition to iron, the Cornwall mines also produced large quantities of copper, gold, silver and cobalt.

As a retired geologist, radiation protection specialist, and manager, Mike Weber grew up collecting rocks and minerals at Cornwall and developed an interest in geology and history. After graduating in the Geosciences from Pennsylvania State University, Mike worked for 36 years for the Federal Government at the U.S. Geological Survey and the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Since retiring in 2018, Mike has volunteered at the Cornwall furnace as a guide and researcher. Mike authored the book “Always More Production” in 2023 about the history of mining iron in Cornwall.
